Ira Gorman, PT,
is the recipient
of the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) 2010 Federal
Legislative Award. The award is given to an APTA member who
demonstrates outstanding leadership in federal legislative issues
and promotes initiatives that preserve, protect, and advance the
practice of physical therapy.
Gorman is assistant professor in
the School of Physical Therapy at Regis University in Denver. He is
a member of APTA’s Health Policy and Administration, Education,
Neurology, and Private Practice sections. Gorman has served as
Colorado Chapter Chief Delegate to APTA’s House of
Delegates (2006-2008) and as Chair on the Colorado Chapter Referral
for Profit Task Force. He has presented at numerous APTA
conferences. In 2005, Gorman received the Outstanding Physical
Therapist Award from APTA’s Colorado Chapter. The Chapter also
bestowed on him the 2004 Bob Doctor Service Award.
Gorman received this latest award
at APTA’s Federal Advocacy Forum, an annual educational event that
focuses on educating members of Congress about physical therapy
issues. Of the association’s 22 forums, Gorman has attended 9.
"Ira has been an active leader
and participant in physical therapy advocacy efforts for a number of
years," said APTA President R. Scott Ward, PT, PhD. "He has served
the association for many years and in many capacities creating
personal relationships with federal legislators. Ira also goes to
great lengths to include his students in the legislative process by
incorporating advocacy in his curriculum."
Gorman holds a Master of Science in Public Health
from the University of Colorado, Department of Preventive Medicine
and Biometrics, and a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from
SUNY at Stony Brook, School of Allied Health Professions in New
York. Additionally he has a bachelor’s degree in biological science
from SUNY. (May 12, 2010)
► Lindsey L. Kirkaldie, SPT, Dolores,
Colo. has received an APTA 2010 Minority Scholarship Award for
Academic Excellence. As a recipient of the award, Lindsey has
demonstrated leadership and dedication to the profession of physical
therapy. She attends Northern Arizona University.
► Michael John Bade, PT, MPT, COMT, FAAOMPT,
is this year's recipient of the Section on Geriatrics' Adopt-A-Doc
Award. The award seeks to recognize outstanding doctoral students
committed to geriatric physical therapy and provides support to
those interested in pursuing faculty positions in PT education. One
award is given yearly and consists of a certificate and a monetary
award up to $5,000 to offset tuition and cost of doctoral research.
Michael is enrolled in the Rehab Science PhD program at the
University of Colorado Denver.
